I still have a flip phone and the original iPod. Which applications will you be using on these devices? The only applications that I would be using on my device would be internet explorer, Microsoft office, and to play games. I really don’t use my computer for much more than surfing the web, playing games, and doing my school work. How may these devices change your life in terms of benefits and risks? I don’t think these devices will change my life other than the cost of a new device. I don’t have all the money in the world so I just stick to what I know. I am not against the new and advancing technology but I like the good old days. Also the only thing other than the price tag on these devices is my ability to understand how to operate them. I know I can learn but, for right now I am doing just fine with what I have. How to cite Ashford University, Essay examples

The superstitious Mans Story Essay Example

The superstitious Mans Story Paper I am going to write about three stories with a gothic genre. The first story is called The Red Room. The Red Room by H. G Wells is about a man who doesnt believe in supernatural beings and is about to spend a night in the most haunted castle. Charles Dickens wrote the second story called, Confession Found in a Prison. It was about a man who killed his nephew because the young boy reminded him of the boys mother, who never trusted him, he couldnt cope with the boys anymore and so he decided to murder him. The final story, The Superstitious Mans Story was written by Thomas Hardy and it is about a man who is thought to be dead, however, everybody keeps seeing him around the village and it is almost as if he is in two places at once. Gothic stories are stories that include elements like blood, murder and other scary elements. It is also a story that includes superstitions and supernatural beings. Gothic stories were extremely popular in the Victorian era because the Industrial Revolution was changing, therefore, everybody wanted to escape from all the reality of the world they lived in, this is called escapism. Another explanation is because of Charles Darwins theory. Charles questioned the religious explanation of the creation of human life by coming up with a theory of evolution where each animal evolves from another. Not only did the people want to escape from the possibility that their belief in the incredibility of Gods powers might be non-existent, they also wanted to explore the possible beings that might exist because people were thinking that if the evolution theory was true, anything could be true. The Gothic stories that were being produced were so different and extra-ordinary to what they were used to reading that they found that reading the books was exhilarating and like a new world. There are many different gothic elements used in The Red Room. These gothic elements are murder, ghosts, darkness, the haunted house which the man stays in, the fact that the man is in there alone, the firelight meaning there isnt much light, legendary deaths, the colours that are in the red room like black and red, the shadows, blood, the setting is at night, there are candles used, the moonlit corridor, the description of the passage which is the chilly, echoing passage. In The Red Room, there are many techniques used such as personification, this is used when H. G Wells includes the line, A monstrous shadow of him crouched upon the wall and mocked his actions. This is personification because shadows cant crouch upon a wall and mock somebodys actions. The author does this because it makes the character feel like there is somebody else there in the room with him in the red room. The technique reflects real life because we see shadows all the time, everywhere we go and it makes the character feel more anxious. The character in play doesnt believe in supernatural beings like ghosts and this makes the character begin to question his beliefs. Another technique used is a metaphor, there is a metaphor used when the author was describing a candle, he wrote, My candle was a little tongue of flame in its vastness. This is a metaphor because the author was comparing the characters candle with a tongue of flame; this makes the character feel intimidated, lonely, paranoid, scared, vulnerable and isolated because there isnt much light and it really enhances the darkness of the setting. Another technique used is a simile, the simile used in the story is, and as I thrust the candle between the bars, darkness closed upon me like the shutting of an eye. There is also a personification in that quote but the simile ensures that the reader can picture exactly what the vision is like. It makes the room seem very dark and it makes the reader feel intimidated and the character would feel scared, frightened and again it makes the reader and the character question their beliefs. A further example of a technique used is repetition. The example of repetition in the story is when the old characters keep on saying, its your own choosing at the beginning of the story, just before the man goes to the red room. It is as if the old people want him to go in to see what it is like but they wouldnt go in themselves so they are therefore warning him of the possible dangers of going in there. The repetition builds up the suspense because it makes the reader carry on reading because they want to find out what it is like in the red room and why it is so dangerous in there and they want to know the history of the red room. They want to find out about the legendary deaths that took place in that room.

Seven essays

Seven essays SEVEN A FILM BY DAVID FINCHER STARRING: BRADD PITT AND MORGAN FREEMAN By Ken Balch World of Ideas 390 Prof. George Adams The movie Seven is a depiction of the inevitable fall of mankind through the grizzly murders of John Doe (Kevin Spacey). Doe commits a series of methodical, exacting, and grotesque murders, as portrayed in the Seven Deadly Sins listed in the novel Marques de Sade, works of Milton, Chaucer, and Dante. The Seven Sins consist of Pride, Envy, Greed, Wrath, Sloth, Gluttony, and Lust. These were set out to show mankind what they must avoid to find their way into Heaven. The killer (Doe) cleverly commits each Sin in such a way that it seems; to the older, wiser detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman), that the man is preaching a sermon. Telling each victim to commit an act of attrition for his or her Sin. Later this notion turns out to be true, for in fact the killer is trying to send out a message of how despicable and ugly mankind has become. We are introduced to Mills (Pitt), at the scene of the first crime. He (Pitt) is a young, brash, full of anger and energy detective. He sees the killer as a fucking nut bag, who owns a library card. The symbolism can easily be detected in the vast differences of the two detectives, the older, cautious, almost poetic Somerset (Freeman). Contrasted by the younger, vile, over eager, act before thinking, Mills (Pitt). The two make a match that combines wit with strength, which will lead to the eventual capture of John Doe. Before the surrender of John Doe, we are walked through a gruesome world of seven murders, which follow the Seven Deadly Sins list presented by Milton, Chaucer, and Dante. First, we see an obese man face down in a plate of spaghetti, killed by eating himself to death; Gluttony was found at the scene behind the fridge, w...

King Louis I of France - Louis the Pious

King Louis I of France - Louis the Pious Louis I was also known as: Louis the Pious or Louis the Debonair (in French, Louis le Pieux, or Louis le Dà ©bonnaire; in German, Ludwig der Fromme; known to contemporaries by the Latin Hludovicus or Chlodovicus). Louis I was known for: Holding the Carolingian Empire together in the wake of his father Charlemagnes death. Louis was the only designated heir to survive his father. Occupations: Ruler Places of Residence and Influence: EuropeFrance Important Dates: Born: April 16, 778Forced to abdicate: June 30, 833Died: June 20, 840 About Louis I: In 781 Louis was appointed king of Aquitaine, one of the sub-kingdoms of the Carolingian Empire, and though he was only three years old at the time he would acquire great experience managing the kingdom as he matured. In 813 he became co-emperor with his father, then, when Charlemagne died a year later, he inherited the empire though not the title Roman Emperor. The empire was a conglomerate of several different ethnic groups, including Franks, Saxons, Lombards, Jews, Byzantines and many others across a great span of territory. Charlemagne had handled the many differences and the large size of his realm by dividing it up into sub-kingdoms, but Louis represented himself not as a ruler of different ethnic groups, but as a leader of Christians in a unified land. As emperor, Louis initiated reforms and redefined the relationship between the Frankish empire and the papacy. He carefully structured a system whereby various territories could be assigned to his three grown sons while the empire remained intact. He took swift action in quashing challenges to his authority and even sent his half-brothers into monasteries to prevent any future dynastic conflicts. Louis also performed voluntary penance for his sins, a display that deeply impressed contemporary chroniclers. The birth of a fourth son in 823 to Louis and his second wife, Judith, triggered a dynastic crisis. Louiss elder sons, Pippin, Lothair and Louis the German, had maintained a delicate if uneasy balance, and when Louis attempted to reorganize the empire to include little Charles, resentment raised its ugly head. There was a palace revolt in 830, and in 833 when Louis agreed to meet Lothair to settle their differences (at what became known as the Field of Lies, in Alsace), he was instead confronted by all his sons and a coalition of their supporters, who forced him to abdicate. But within a year Louis had been released from confinement and was back in power. He continued to rule energetically and decisively until his death in 840. Strategic Marketing Plan Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words

Strategic Marketing Plan - Term Paper Example Budget is tight for the first year and as such, management shall be more than careful in its decision making for the business. Employees shall carefully be chosen and the owner shall make sure that each personnel are oriented towards achieving its corporate goal which is to start gaining profit by the end of the first year. Competition would be very stiff with the presence of various coffee shops that have already established their presence in various parts of Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates. Aviano Coffee is also confident in being able to make gains through its Internet channel. Its Marketing efforts shall be intensified to ensure that the corporate message is brought across the target market. To cap this off, Aviano Coffee Shop wants to achieve two things with the business: to share excellent coffee experience through its quality products and to gain profits to ensure presence in the market for a long period of time. II. BACKGROUND Coffee remains to be one of the mo st preferred beverages anywhere in the world. In the US, it is estimated that 50% of the total population or approximately 150 Million Americans drink coffee in any form, be it espresso, cappuccino, latte or cold coffee. Moreover, among these coffee aficionados, the average consumption is 3.1 cups per day (Coffee Business Statistics Report 2010). As such, it is expected that more and more Coffee shops open and thrive serving the tastes of these coffee lovers. Despite the presence of numerous Coffee shops in the country, there is yet room for more entrepreneurs who want to serve the needs of the Coffee lovers. While some may opt to go traditional, others diversify to create concept shops that do not only serve ordinary coffee, but also the fast growing industry of specialty coffee. It is with these premises that the author proposes to bring into local franchise the Colorado based brand Aviano Coffee. Aviano Coffee is popularly known in Colorado, with its market reach extending to oth er cities in Denver. Its product line highlights Latte Art, where baristas manually extract espresso. The key to competition is the manner by which specialty coffee drink is done, focusing on aesthetics of the coffee products and the ambience within the coffee shop, which focuses on the 18th and 19th century. Management wants to bring its clients into the specialty coffee experience capturing olden moments through appropriate interior design and shop structure. The thrust is to bring into the shop people who intend to have a good coffee experience (Aviano Coffee 2011). Bringing the concept store in Dubai will prove to be a challenging but exciting experience for the owners. Promoting the business within a unique culture, there will be little tweaks into the concept to ensure that the target market will feel most welcome when entering the concept store. This business plan discusses the strategies by which the concept is introduced to the target market in Dubai, and hopefully to other cities in the United Arab Emirates. III. SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS The United Arab Emirates is considered to be one of the most liberal Middle East Countries in the world, according to the State of World Liberty Index It is also considered to be the 5th highest in the whole world basing on GDP per capita, and is the fastest growing economy globally (Top 5 Most Liberal Muslim Countries 2011). The presence of bars, clubs, movie theatres and commercial

Medical Malpractice Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Medical Malpractice - Research Paper Example An understanding of the causes/dimensions, effects and liabilities of medical malpractice can help one to avoid such professional negligence and malpractice lawsuits. Medical malpractice and its characteristics Current trends and statistics relating to medical malpractice Within the past six centuries, medical malpractice has increased drastically. According to statistics, there were a total of 2696 serious cases of malpractice in the United States in 1999 alone (Medical Malpractice par 1). The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences states that about 98000 patients risk losing their lives in various hospitals in the US due to medical malpractices (Medical Malpractice par 1). In today’s society, a doctor’s responsibility is to provide affordable care, talent and reasonable judgment in the course of duty. Whenever patients are given wrongly diagnosed, mal-treated or die due to what is perceived to be medical malpractice, the doctors normally are subject ed to a lot of suffering without appreciating their efforts or whatever good they may have done before to save lives. This situation also makes fellow doctor fear performing certain risky procedures for fear of going through similar or worse experiences. Potential doctors are also discouraged from joining the medical profession when they witness such situations. Characteristics of Negligence Malpractice is negligence. Cases of negligence fall under the description of torts. A tort may be a common offence, thus malpractice could be a common offence. In the simplest terms, there are four essential elements of malpractice which include duty, breach, damage and (direct) causal affiliation. Each healthcare supplier assumes a duty when beginning diagnosis, consultations, or treatment of a patient. The duty or responsibility emanates from an implied or expressed contract. Another important element of medical malpractice is breach. If one fails to create an accurate diagnosis once he or she has assumed the duty to try and do so, one might commit a breach of responsibility. Thirdly, causal affiliation which states that damage is caused by a failure to properly diagnose the breach responsibility. Damage is the outcome of a failure to diagnose properly. Medical malpractice occurs when a patient sustains injuries or complications that may or may not be of a permanent and continuing nature due to negligence (Pozgar 558). Negligence is among the most typical civil suit filed against doctors. Legal responsibility for negligence cannot be found unless the following subsequent elements are present: One, the defendant should owe an obligation to the plaintiff to practice care. Two, the defendant should breach the quality of care stipulated by law for his/her behavior. Thirdly, the plaintiff should suffer loss or damage as a result of this breach. Lastly, the behavior of the defendant should be the near cause of the plaintiff’s injury or damage ((Pozgar 65). Cases related to medical malpractice In the case of Adderly v. Bremner it was noted that the defendant medical doctor was careless in not altering the syringes to vaccinate thirty eight patients and as an alternative used one needle for more than one patient (Pozgar 76). As a result, the plaintiff experienced blood poisoning. The doctor in this case did not provide the specified correct care. Any sensible doctor would have actually
